What we're talking about...

12 Days of Christmas Giving 2015

23rd December 2015 By Kevin Barber in Small Business News

Small businesses are the back-bone of the UK economy. In fact, a recent study shows that out of all businesses in the UK, 99% of them are SME’s. Small Businesses play a huge part in the national economy but even more so, it’s the contribution to their local community that really signifies their importance. Here at Trading for Good we would like to thank all the Small Businesses who have created a profile and recorded their social value activities during, collectively you have made an amazing contribution. We have highlighted below a few of the activities that have been completed by members of Trading for Good in the lead up to Christmas this year.

On the First Day of Christmas The All in One Company gave to us…

A warm blanket for Orphan Titch the hedgehog

A mini blanket made out of onesie off cut fabric will help keep Autumn orphan Titch safe and warm during the winter. As thousands of people enjoy the comfort of one of the most popular Christmas gifts, eight-week-old Titch – and scores of other rescued hedgehogs – will also feel the benefit of the freeze-busting fleece. Thirty blankets, created out of leftover onesie material, have been made for the Cleveland Hedgehog Preservation Society (CHPS) by staff at The All-in-One Company, which has just celebrated its seventh birthday. It has dozens of bags of remnant material and asked charities throughout the North East how it could be put to good use. Hand-made blankets have been handed over to a Tyneside charity for the homeless and now mini versions have also been given to the CHPS which every year looks after hundreds of abandoned, orphaned or injured hedgehogs. Its chairman Chris Firth and his wife Barbara looked after hedgehogs for 16 years at their home in Billingham and now support the society’s 86 members and 10 volunteer carers. “We’ve had calls in the middle of the night from the fire brigade about hedgehogs trapped down drains and one Christmas we were looking after 22 – as well as our family and friends,” he said. Despite the efforts of CHPS and other volunteer groups around the country the number of hedgehogs in the UK has fallen from an estimated 1.55 million in 1995 to less than a million 20 years later.

Sponsored an art exhibition TUC Exhibition Liverpool 2014: Holocaust Remembered

Century One Publishing was proud to sponsor an art exhibition at the TUC Congress 2014 in Liverpool at the start of September. Our fantastic design team worked collaboratively with artist Tom Lemon and the CWU Communications department, to collate a small but interesting and informative display for union delegates to explore at Congress. Following an educational field trip to the Sachsenhausen prison camp near Berlin, CWU member and part-time art student Tom, decided to turn his collection of German Third Reich stamps into a powerful artistic statement on the horrors of the Holocaust and the ever-pressing need for us all to be aware of the unspeakable evils to which bigotry and prejudice can lead. With generous donations from delegates we raised over £100 for the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust via a bucket collection at Congress and during the CWU Conference in Bournemouth back in May.

Healthy eating options

We encourage our staff to snack on fruits which are provided free of charge rather than biscuits and chocolates, though this is not always successful!

Paid Internships

We have been pleased to offer paid internships for Undergraduates and they have assisted us in specific projects as well as obtaining useful experience to record on their CV.

An Apprenticeship

We seek to integrate school leavers into work through the Apprenticeship programme as this offers a structured learning pattern alongside real work. We've offered Gemma a Business Administration apprenticeship which is a part of completing her qualifications. She completed her A levels in 2015.

Flexible working practices

We endeavour to offer flexibility to our staff so that they can complete their work mindful of family responsibilities. Naturally, there are clients to work with, and a business to maintain, so it is not always possible to agree to every request but, where possible, we do try to permit flexibility where it is required.

A Media Discovery Event

We had the pleasure of being at the Media Discovery event held at UCS in Ipswich hosted by Genesis PR in October. Media Discovery brought together young professionals working in areas such as PR, Digital Media, Journalism, Radio, TV, Design, Event Management, Marketing, Photography and Audio-Visual, to showcase a wide variety of creative careers available in Suffolk and the wider region. We showcased what it’s like to work as filmmakers and the possible career opportunities available in the field.

On the Ninth Day of Christmas Valentine Clays gave to us…

Great supplier relationships

As a small business to us price isn't everything and we are more focused on a good working relationship with our suppliers. We try to use where possible local, small, family run businesses with similar ethics and business practice to ourselves, which ensures that we maintain a great working relationship.

Support for the British Ceramics Biennial: Flower, Factory, Field

Donated flower clay to help the British Ceramics Biennial with their project: Flower, Factory, Field which focused on the rich heritage of ceramic industry in The Potteries, and the role of women ceramic flower makers during the First World War. Although the history of the ceramics industry in Stoke-on-Trent is known worldwide, the contribution of the ceramics industry and its workers to the war effort is less well known. The Clay Foundation through this project provided young people with the opportunity to gain new heritage skills in making bone china flowers under instruction of one of Stoke-on-Trent's remaining talented flower makers, which contributed to an exhibition display at the British Ceramics Biennial Festival in 2015.

About Valentine Clays

World-leading clay manufacturer and raw material supplier to studio potters, the education sector, and ceramics industry.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas Little Trove gave to us…

Fair trade for their suppliers

As a fair trade business, we are not in the business of screwing our suppliers down on price till they are compelled to work for very little money just to get the business. Sure, we have to make sure the price is right for us, but we do not use any tactics to get them to agree to unsustainable prices. In fact, we work together with our least developed supplier on costings and pricing to ensure that the price reached is fair for both.

Free advice to anti-human trafficking group on design of jewellery

Our suppliers in South Africa (of jewellery made from rescued trafficking victims), were slightly stuck in their ways. They were lacking innovation and speed in coming up with new products to keep up with the market. We gave them lots of unsolicited advice because we had their best interests in mind. Initially, they resisted our advice, preferring to concentrate on their social and medical work. Eventually they understood that designing new products that will sell better (and give the survivors more income) also required their attention alongside the medical and social work. They are now actively innovating! We hear they have learnt how to make silver brass jewellery too. Can't wait to see those samples.

About Little Trove
